Meet Rick Garland in the gallery on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th of November from 12pm until 4pm.

Rick Garland’s new collection of work, ‘Intermission’, explores the idea of the preservation of memory, employing the motif of the vitrine and the ‘cabinet of curiosities’. Museums began in the homes of collectors who created their own displays of objects, with the mundane often sitting alongside the bizarre. It was the collector’s own interests which determined the nature of the objects and the way in which they were arranged.
In Garland’s new paintings, glass bell jars, complete with their polished wooden bases, encase the artist’s memories, whether uplifting or traumatic. Antique printers’ drawers and display units become Garland’s own ‘cabinets’ of objects which hold significance for him. These paintings create unexpected juxtapositions: wrestlers from the 1980s (Giant Haystacks et al) sit beside a packet of the powdered desert Angel Delight, within the shelves of a Regency cabinet. Events or objects which may, in themselves, seem trivial, can attain huge significance in the memory of an individual when they become associated with a major event, or with an important period in that person’s life.

Rick Garland is exploring what might happen if an individual was let loose in a museum store and given free rein to create a display. The memories of an individual may seem random to anybody else, but they have a logic within one particular life.
