Damien Hirst Biography

Early Life

Born in Bristol in 1965 as Damien Steven Brennan, artist Damien Hirst was raised in Leeds. Arrested twice for shoplifting, Damien's path to success was far from smooth sailing. Although he received an E in A-Level art, Damien went on to attain a Foundation level Diploma from Jacob Kramer College before studying at Goldsmiths College despite being rejected from both courses on initial application.

Whilst studying for his BA (1986–89), Damien Hirst became part of a group known as the Young British Artists, leading their first exhibition, "Freeze", in 1988. His first solo exhibition, "In and Out of Love", was in 1991 and became the first in a long line of successful exhibitions.

Notable works

Damien has produced several critically acclaimed pieces and collections - some of which include:

  • In and Out of Love
  • The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living
  • Mother and Child Divided
  • Pharmaceutical
  • For the Love of God
As a result of his work on The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, Damien Hirst was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995.
